“friends part forever — wild geese lost in cloud” — Basho

.

All the words I learned could be held in one

hand and they all meant going home. Morning

and I would dress in this land of deep sun

and deep mountains. Dress half sober, walking

to the Polytechnic to learn new words.

Always words. Always that long blue mountain

watching, calling her children. As absurd

as a whale’s call. But so much bigger than

that, a call so big that it spoke in dumb

silence, tongue of bone and claw, alphabet’s

secret groan. As if to say, “come to me,

child.” As if to say,“come home, my child, come.”

No. I’m no one’s child and no one gets

to go home. No. Not this child. Not really.

lost in clouds

Reading in the cold of the afternoon
I grow sleepy, stand up to get my blood
flowing. Under my window there’s a dune
of snow, a hillock. I have tried acid,
hashish and opium, but none of them
bring me such visions as that half-way state
between our life and death. When the warm phlegm
freezes in my throat, and all my deadweight
pushes upon my heart, then the dreams come.
Then I leave this body, cold as iron,
and fly, as Basho said, like “wild geese lost
in the clouds.”
There is a lovely wisdom
to be found, lost in clouds. When I return
I find my poor body covered in frost.

Note:

The Japanese poet Matsuo Basho wrote the haiku I’m quoting part of. The whole poem reads: “Friends part/ forever — wild geese/ lost in cloud.” Ah, heartache.

“La abeja, que salen de profunda

dentro de la peonía, sale a regañadientes.”

— Matsuo Basho.

Perdido en el inconsciente.

Las abejas toman néctar a sus colmenas.

Tu flor se abre. Mi lengua.

Una abeja grasa. Lamer

a tu memoria.

Mecos como el polen.

La miel de amor.

¿Te acuerdas?

(“The bee emerging from deep within the peony leaves reluctantly.” Matsuo Basho. Lost in the unconscious. Bees take nectar to their hives. Your flower opens. My tongue. A fat bee. Licking your memory. Cum as pollen. Love honey. Do you remember?)
