afterlife in polaroids

I.

There’s a pink motel

somewhere for me. I

can’t wait to go haunt

it.  When I’m dead. I will

be. Giant pink
eerie lips

that make soft num-

num sounds.  It
is said

a pound of flesh will get

you a lot
less than it did

in your parent’s day.

II.

I’ve
read there is no kissing in hell.

III.

It’s a shame lips

don’t survive. Bones

become the playhouse

of ghosts; after

scavengers discard

them, worms
bask

in them, a kingdom

that the wind scorns.

IV.

What if it all came down

to this?
subdued spots

where I could paint your

toes?  A calm sink to
spit

into?  Our bodies behind

closed pink doors.
Crude

motel shadows at bath.

Relaxed and wild with
it

we start, we end our days

as a mirror image.

Speaking Between the Lines: Line-lengths and What They Can Do For You

twritersdirectory:

LIn
this series we will look at the fundamental elements of poetry, from individual
units of sound to grand uses of metaphor and imagery. By examining the
different ways skilled writers implement these elements we can gain a greater
understanding of the ways poetry works and improve both our practice of writing
poetry and our appreciation of reading it.

In the first article of this series we began at the
end, by examining line-breaks and how the different choices made when ending a
line can influence the readers’ perception of a poem. By examining a poetic
element that we almost take for granted when reading, I hoped to show that
every tool in the poet’s arsenal can be used to great effect.

But today we are going to take a step back and
examine the line as a whole, to explore this most fundamental element of
poetry. The ‘line’ is the most basic way a poem can be organised. It forces us
to be aware of sections of speech we run through quickly in prose, and/or
internalise the speech patterns of the poem’s speaker.

Different movements—and writers—in poetry have
various emphasised these two functions of poetry. For some people a line should
mirror the lengths of breaths in speech; for others it should contain and focus
on singular images or thoughts.

By the end of this article I hope to have discussed
both philosophies. I also hope to show that far from an unconscious, arbitrary choice,
line-lengths in free verse poetry are full of meaning and importance which
skilled writers can use to fully embellish their writing.

one should always be drunk that is all that matters

Charles Baudelaire, French poetry, French quote, one should always be drunk that is all that matters, quote unquote

One should always be drunk. That is all
that matters; so as not to feel Time’s
horrid burden that breaks your shoulders and grinds you down, you
must get drunk without resting.

But on what? On wine, poetry, or virtue
as you please. But get drunk.

And if, at some time, on steps of a
palace, or in the green grass of a ditch, or in the bleak loneliness
of your room, as you wake and find your  drunkenness already dying
away, ask the wind, ask the wave, ask the stars, ask the clock – all
that which runs, all that which groans, all that which rolls, all
that which sings, all that which speaks – ask them, what time is it?
and the wind, the waves, the stars, the birds, and the clock, will
all reply:  “It’s time to get drunk! So that you may not be the
martyred slaves of Time, get drunk, get drunk and never pause for
rest! On wine, poetry, or virtue, as you please!”

– Charles Baudelaire

it was a horrible horrible show and yet had a couple of good lines, married with children, quote unquote

Al: Do you wanna come out in the garage
and use one of the sanders?

Peg: Not on the car…

……………………

Peg: If you had what other men had, I
wouldn’t need batteries any more.

……………………

Marcie: I love to go to the dentist. A
man in white hovering over me while I’m trapped helpless in a chair.
He cleans me. He flosses me. His instruments alive in my mouth. And
just when I don’t think I can take it anymore, he says,‘Good girl,
Marcie, you can spit now.’

……………………

Peg:  I know you look at me and think
of eye candy, but it can never be for two reasons: 1) I belong to
another and 2) You wouldn’t survive the ride.

11 rules, reblog, sister, words to live by

so-fucking-reckless:

  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another’s lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm little children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them.

Coos Bay, fate, Hart Crane, Li Po, poets who've drowned, shadow in the waves, spirit shark

This dream … I dream of this every
single night, being washed over the side of a ship and having the
goddess of the waves, a shadow from the deep masquerading in the skin
of a great white shark, swallow me whole … for the last ten years
when I dream. If I dream. I wrote this for my master’s thesis:

Of the three – Hart Crane,

Li Po and me – Li died

moon viewing in the dark.

Crane drowned at 3

and I was eaten by a shark

– or so they’ll say.

It was true in 2003 when I was in Coos
Bay, Oregon; I saw a shadow in the waves. Even now I can hear her
calling for me. I am a coward for living on dry land. Then I laugh
because don’t we all try to run away from our fate? Ai, fate.
