Dante, grief, heart murmur, losing my cat, losing my old boy, poem, Poetry, sonnet

“Midway through this maddening life,” you know
how this goes, “I found myself unredeemed

in a dark wood.” The “right road” was wrong. No.
The road was gone, as in, damned. What I dreamed.

What I blasphemed. Lovers of words must name
horror. I have swallowed demons before,

felt their workings in me. “Clock: tock-tock.” Same
shame. Same grief. Damn me with a touch of gore

on the cogwheel. Things slow down. In your heart
there is a murmur. You know how this goes.

X-rays show blood clots. Demons I can’t squeeze
out of you. That is my horror, sweetheart,

I’ll lose you midway … despite all of those
prayers and tears and pathetic “don’t leave me”s.

… at the midpoint of the journey of life, I found myself in a dark forest, for the clear path was lost.
—Dante Alighieri, Inferno

All roads to Hell start like this, Dante tells
us. The path into purgatory, though,
the ghost realm, is much more difficult. Hell’s
Nine Circles are sick and flash, we all know
Hellz da bomb. Limbo, though, is a bus ride.
We wound through the farms on the Hrazdan,
then north, near Aragats. I had no guide,
no blessed Virgil. I could not speak more than
baby-words. But, as the bus turned the last
mountain pass, there it was spread out below:
empty, vast, flat. A gray valley so vast
it was all horizon. But there—a glow
on the edge—ghost ruin that had survived
the ’88 earthquake—I had arrived.

notes:

Inferno is the first part of Dante’s epic poem Divine Comedy. It is an allegory telling of the journey Dante took through Hell, guided by the soul of the Roman poet, Virgil.

Hrazdan is a river that flows through the Ararat valley, irrigating many apricot orchards and farmland. It divides the city of Yerevan in half. Once, during a very drunken party, a bunch of us Americans went skinny dipping in the river because what’s the point of having a river in your city if you can’t strip off all your clothes and jump in it now and then?

Mt. Aragats is the highest peak in Armenia, forming part of a mountain chain that separates Gyumri from Yerevan. To travel between the two cities required me taking a big red autobus that traveled roughly 15 miles an hour, it felt like, worming its way up and down high mountain roads. The city I refer to at the end of the poem is Gyumri, which in 1988 was totally destroyed in an earthquake that killed 25,000 people. When I arrived seven years later it was still rubble, looking like something out of a war movie.

7 japanese rope tricks

7 japanese rope tricks

* * *

Seven is a bad number. Forget sins
or the seas; Sindbad and all the evils

of the world couldn’t change that. It begins
with an usurper, seven archangels
and a week of toil. Dante had seven
circles of hell and Caina the demon.
Mohammad knew of a seventh heaven.

But the seventh son of a seventh son
is cursed. The Lamb’s seven horns brings godless
pain. The conquest of mere spirit over
flesh has unsexed us all. Sappho warned us.
Wilde warned us. Do not be deceived, lover.

Tyrants will say anything to seem strong.

It makes you wonder what else they got wrong?

Dante, desert, flash flood, Las Vegas, mesquite, rain, saguaro, sonnet

On that day the worse rain in thirty years
poured down, killed three people. Very little
causes Las Vegas to shut down. The fears
of the Rust Belt have no home here. Virgil
sat on my left hand, Dante at my right.
We watched the streets flood and the arroyos
overflow. Mesquite released a smell, fright
mixed with fate, in the air. The saguaro’s
green sides rumbled in the rain like doomsday
drums. I have met some fearful and anxious
ghosts since, but none were afraid as Dante
on the day I moved into Las Vegas.
Still, we survived, came out the other side
with no hoopla, or even spirit guide.

Beatrice, Dante, forbidden, sonnet

You have offered yourself a dozen times,
but it’s only self-control that I prize.
Mine, not yours. I understand you. Sometimes
I can understand mine too. I despise
what I’ve become. I long for green sunshine
in the oaks. Shadows of leaves that crisscross
across the wondrous curve of your spine
as you lay spread out on your bed of moss.
All that is gone. Out from the blackness pins
point to light, become shafts we’ll devour
together. I miss finding brand new sins
that we would deny ourselves. I miss our
summer days in the grass when we would play
at love-sick Beatrice and sly Dante.

OOBATZ. Pronounced oo-‘botz.
It means ‘crazy’ or ‘you’re crazy’
in Italian slang.

This was merely one more new delight
for my horse-dick brother -- dripping honeyed
cum. He slowly pushed steel into my tight
asshole until the whole shaft was buried
to his balls. Then Dante began shaking
back and forth, moving his cock in my ass.
I felt filled, throbbing, my asshole gaping
as I squeezed him. Grabbing my hourglass
hips he jack-hammered, oobatz. He and I
then came: me for the third time and his first.
Cum and cry. That's all I did. Cum and cry
with his cock until I thought I would burst.
That's how I became a Strap-on Sister.
Rudest of Playthings. An Ass Girl Lover.
