My friend Scott, author of the blog Human Writes, has been for a while following and championing the poetry and life of a Pakistani poet, Maryam Shahbaz, who lives in the city of Sialkot. I’ve been following his posts because, frankly, her work is amazing (and so is his) and I can’t wait until her book of poetry is published so I can have my very own copy as well.

It was with shock and dismay that I read about a bomb going off at an all-woman’s university in the city of Quetta, killing at least one student. The BBC reported:

At least 11 students and have been killed and 22 wounded in a blast on a bus at a university for women in the north-western Pakistani city of Quetta. “It was an improvised explosive device placed in the women university bus,” police chief Zubair Mahmood said. Some attacks are carried out by separatists and others by Islamists who oppose women’s education.

Here in the West artists have the freedom to write or make whatever they want and there are virtually no repercussions. They do not craft work that threatens any established order, they say nothing that is a blasphemy in a world where simply being female and educated is seen as a sin by some, and most importantly, their art changes no lives for the better. Not in real, concrete ways, not like Maryam is trying to do.

My heart and thoughts go out to those hurt and killed in yesterday’s terrorist attack. The dark that surrounds us is a violent and cruel place toward those who try to speak the truth, for those who attempt to change the established order for the better of everyone. No one ever wishes to find themselves in such a world; however, when we do we have a moral obligation to help change it. Even if my personal art does not change anything, I can deeply support those whose art does.

Thank you, Scott, for following the work of this brave poet and thank you everyone who supports Pakistan, feminism and the arts. These are the tools that will help us change future generations for the better. Blessings.

fox demon 1
.
.
Beast, demon, girl. You are not an animal, unless the mountains are like animals. Unless the gods walk on all fours and fuck like beasts. Because when we fuck there is nothing human in us left. Your musk, your perfume, your animal instinct fills my blood. Blue fox demon, I’ll wait for you at our own Reichenbach falls. Please do not keep me hanging.

Eu não concordo que este é nada mais que um truque da natureza, que nos impele a ter nossa espécie preservada. No chão do banheiro, nossas roupas. No chuveiro, nossas corpos suados. No ar, sussurros e gemidos. Isto é como os deuses falar. O orgasmo que nos permite ver seus rostos. Um pouco a língua, delírio e um quente do noite. Esta mais do que simples biologia.
.
I do not agree that this is nothing more than some trick of nature that forces us to have our species preserved. On the bathroom floor, our clothes. In the shower, our sweaty bodies. In the air, whispers and moans. This is how the gods speak. The orgasm that allows us to see their faces. A little tongue, delirium and one hot night. This more than just mere biology.

sword1

I.
A grave lost at dusk.
She speaks to her dead lover
in her lover’s tongue.

II.
Two fingers inside.
What do I taste like? Bleed me.
Fuck me. Make me burn.

III.
I’m fire: fire’s climax.
I burn, I die, I embrace
all our little deaths.

alien, eu vou queimar através de você, I will burn through you, Poetry, Portuguese translation, xenomorph sex

Línguas, garras, fantasias na tua boca.
Beijar meu alienígena de ácido
revestimento meu grelo e lábios.
De orgasmo do supernova explodindo.
Meu desejo completamente cósmico.
Beije-me, se você ousar.
Meu esporra vai queimar através de você.

.
Tongues, claws, fantasies in your mouth.
Kiss my alien acid
coating my clit and lips.
Supernova exploding orgasm.
My desire is completely cosmic.
Kiss me, if you dare.
My cum will burn right through you.

Alien sentimento e desejo.
.
I am a worshiper of chemistry, understanding purple haze, xenomorph desires. A handjob becomes long nights of brief joys under the fingertips. You do not understand. Acid intertwined with my blood. Extraterrestrial movements of my skin. Alien feelings and desire.

armenian graveyard

If you have been following the news in Turkey right now you might know that there is civil unrest in the streets, all originating from the government’s attempt to turn one of the last green spaces in downtown Istanbul into a shopping mall (and yes, that is Tilda Swinton in the top photo).

What the media hasn’t pointed out is that the said disputed park actually has a long and controversial history. Armenian protestors at Gezi park have been carrying signs that read in Turkish, Armenian and English: You captured our graveyard, but you can’t capture our park!

This is a reference to the Pangaltı Armenian graveyard that was destroyed in the 1930s to make way for the current park and surrounding hotels. Because everywhere you scratch in Turkey blood boils to the surface.
