I am the mildest of creatures, spell-bound,
gossamer, a thorn jutting. The nox diva

inside the mushrooms growing on the mound
where I buried you. First there is nausea,
sweats, my gut turning. Then you open up

inside my skull-bone; a whiskey cactus,
melting. A mushroom is like a polyp;

I’ve found both on you. I turn, like Horace,
into your well-mannered court slave. Ghost slave.

Slave of a ghost. Each time you slide into
my mouth you leave part of yourself behind.

One day I’ll consume you all. Then your grave
will stand empty. I can’t let go of you,

no-no, even if I was so inclined.

* * *

Notes:

Nox diva is my attempt at translating the phrase “night goddess” into Latin.

Horace was one of Rome’s greatest poets, one whom the English poet John Dryden dismissed as “a well-mannered court slave.”

cat, ghost, praise song, shark, sonnet

If you can please a cat then you can please
a ghost, I believe. They’re so similar.
Cats. Ghosts. Sharks. Killers that love their bellies
scratched. I’ve touched shark snout, ghost skin and cat fur.
I could lie, tell you that I understood
what was under my hand. I could, perhaps.
Cats and ghosts both seek out love: that odd, good
human talent, but once they have it lapse
into indifference. Sharks are simply
curious and like to play. But knowing
that, I know nothing. I love mystery
but I can’t explain it. I can just sing.
Of cats’ ghostly needs, the kitten-like ghost
prowling, the shark’s soul that I love the most.

If I had the voice I’d sing the mystic’s
lullaby, salt hallow, to keep you safe.
But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,
my voice a lisping hell, must love my waif
sister, family ghost, in a new way.
Your eyes are beautiful beggars, now beg
for fry bread and a butterscotch sundae.
I’ll feed you. Between your legs your pink egg
cracks. I’ll break it for you. Like a firefly
you sleep three feet off the floor. I’ll guard you.
When you cry I’ll kiss your shaggy bangs dry.
And in rutting season I’ll make you mew,
then goo on me. A song for a sinner.
A lullaby for my dead kid sister.

Lily, unless the gifted Anahit
lies at your side, sleepless you must now be.
To watch a lover burn up, like mincemeat,
over No Man’s Land. How your poor empty
bed must recall the groans then moans? Again
all these odes to war. Nine muses, you say?
Sappho the Bisexual makes it ten.
Poet of Wars and Clits. Old Boss DJ
still spins your tracks. “I am what I say.” Poor
Sappho, you are bones and dust. Lily’s love
lays, burned in a field. Not even the sky
can drink up all her tears. What fool said war
was good sport? Let her grave be of foxglove,
wild plums; even bisexuals must die.

minhas portas para o reino dos céus, my kingdom of heaven, perineum, Portuguese, praise song, translation

Uma ode à tua períneo. Naquela

estreita, deserta região, o istmo

que medeia paixão, sempre

esquecido, entre o norte e o sul.

Deixe-me fazer uma pausa — North?

South? In? Out? — todos os caminhos

vão em direção a Roma. Eu sou nenhum

arma de guerra, mas eu vou chamá-lo

de meu, esta área não tocada

por homens ou máquinas. Minhas

portas para o reino dos céus.

In English:

An ode to your perineum. That narrow, deserted region, the isthmus that mediates passion, often forgotten, between north and south. Let me pause — North? South? In? Out? — All roads lead toward Rome. I’m no weapon of war, but I’ll call it mine, this area untouched by men or machines. My door to the kingdom of heaven.

Você quer me possuir?

Para me conquistar?

O que você faria? Eu opto

pelo devaneio de teus dor.

Por tua agonia diária, tua

insaciável fome. Nossa infidelidade

lasciva e despreocupada. Dor

endurecido. Dor umedecido.

Sinto o cheiro do meu esporra

no você. Esta homenagem

ao tua voraz depravação.

In English:

You want to own me? To conquer me? What would you do? I opt for daydreaming of your pain. For your daily agony, your insatiable hunger. Our lewd and casual infidelity. Pain hardened. Pain moistened. I smell my cum in you. This tribute to your ravenous depravity.

Lordy, I’m getting up in years but mama

ain’t too old to shift her gears” — Ida Cox.

It’s sort of a fetish with me. Your ass
in fishnets; I’ve always had a thing for
older women in fishnets, their hourglass
lips, ball-breaking boots. Out on the dreamfloor
of our bedroom someone stands up. Someone
begins calling me home. Home is hardcore,
ancient and changing. I love your shaven
lips and your whiskey hip voice. I love your
smile while you’re gagging me down, while bending
down in that skirt. You’re somebody’s mother.
Tonguing your two cheeks apart, those two thigh
pillows. That letter from mama, calling:
come home child, before I die, the letter
from her, I die, I – come before I die.
