We’ve both seen seals bobbing on the ocean.

Any witchin’ that drowns sailors, cracks ships,

is good. Any tongue that makes, “làn-mara,” run

a gift. “There’s a harbor between your hips,”

Ma said. High tide runs fast there when your seal

wakes from dreaming. We’ve both heard selkies talk,

those gray women bound to men who steal

their skins. Our magic runs different: with cock

and cunt, with moon and tide, with your harbor

gushing. “Don’t tell Ma,” you said. “Don’t

stop.” I’ve drowned before. Your fat waves break

on my chin. The rim of your flooding shore.

The fog-lost lip of your cunt’s brim. I won’t

stop. Our witchin’ of the sea. Our sea’s ache.

Notes:

Folklore from the Northern Isles of Scotland talk of the selkie, the seal folk, who are able to pass as human by shedding their seal skin. Unfortunately the selkie are also in the habit of forgetting to hide the one thing that gives mortals power over them so there are many fairy tales in which some complete failure embodying the worst aspects of manhood brings home a seal wife who spends all her time begging to be released and pining for the sea. In Scot-Gaelic, “làn-mara,” is the term for high tide.

Afloat and nowhere. Never reign; open

Pie. Her elbow’s bone. Her wit of a clit.
As in, suck in. As in, gag. Someone sings
of all the dreams that she brings from the wide

open sea; of all the dreams that she brings.
Come. Get me. I’m singing down at low tide.
Get me milky-sweet and barely swimming.

As in, mud. I’ll suck you down. Rattled face.
Broken bone. Rasping selkie tea. Frayed stitch

Lover Pie. Lover seal skin. You’re pale face.
I’m both: Sea-Bitch and the Son-of-a-Bitch.

wily weird sisters

Don’t trust stories where boys, down in the kelp,
steal seal-skins from nude girls – they all end grisly.
Only a wily weird sister can help
romance a seal-girl. Go out to the sea
in a cow-hide boat. She will stand, murmur
love spells to the waves. The seal will surface,
then climb on board. A watery cat-purr
is sign of a selkie stirred. Seamless
is her fleshy skin, still, she wriggles out
as you cuddle her head and your sister
grips her hips, her mouth on her slit-pout,
licking up a storm. A seal-girl lover
will want you both, will soak your lips and chin.
That’s how you drive a seal out of her skin.

NOTE:

Stories and legends of sea spirits that live as seals in the ocean but have the ability shed their skin to become human on land can be found throughout Iceland, the Shetlands, the Orkneys, Northern England, Scotland and Ireland. The film The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) was based on such a myth.

smut by the sea

Take me down in a tidal pool; swimsuit
around my knees. “Skerries beg/ the seal’s
bride,”
we once sang. I am Neptune’s child: mute,
dark-eyed, insatiable. I sing the eel’s
want, the urchin’s need. I know of the sin
that can only be found under the moon,
down at ebb time’s tide. Take me; make my chin
slick from your spray. Even sex-starved Neptune
found joy sitting on the sand and dreaming
of what lay below. We are all sex-starved.
Let the great, gray seal colony — crying,
“lick me, lick me” — cry. I love a myth carved
into shifting sand; obscure and far-flung.
I love the selkie’s cock, the siren’s tongue.
