We teach this craft, this light craft, this whimsey
of salt and candles. —First pour a circle
of salt, —sit in it, —call, —so mote it be.
But it shall not be. Salt is a crystal
warning you need to decipher. It rules
in our skin. It commands. Misconstrue
salt and no circle will save you. Vain fools
think these elements light. I hope not you.
From the North comes the machine’s death, comes Earth;
from the East comes the furious art, Air;
from the South comes the devil’s breast called Fire;
from the West comes Water, the night’s mind, the birth
of fear. Call, call, call, but be warned, this prayer
will bind you, —to salt’s rage, —salt’s dark empire.

Do not trust still water. It has no salt.
The first time I drank another’s life blood,
one lone dribble from behind the ear, fault
of fuck bites, that brackish taste, that queer flood,
filled me, alien and perverse, I knew
that no rush of river, no stagnate pond,
nothing that was simple like day-blind dew,
rain or fresh water could take me beyond.
Not the way orgasms lead us to ride
the gods or how a blood drop holds life’s curse.
It’s all about making the sweat begin.
I wish to know the wild thing that you hide,
the thing that makes you alien and perverse,
the thing hidden in the salt on your skin.

There is salt on my lips. I love that salt.
I am in love with all far-seen places.
All that rooted — red woods, sea beds, asphalt,
teeth — makes me happy. All the past, pieces
no one can recall, fascinates me. Why?
Why would we look back? Our love and hatred
all lost, a root pulled free, a flowing sky
going nowhere. Because nothing rooted
lasts and we love to root. I love the past
tense and its lies that says we have survived.
I love that you still think your memory
is your own. Kiss this salt off. What can last
beyond now? Nothing. Kiss me here. Deprived
of past. Rootless child, odd skylark. Kiss me.
