That was the year the cicadas started

in my skull. Their buzz-saw droning; the fraught

song of dust and summer, I’m told. Bleated

noise. It came with the pneumonia. I thought

it was part of the fever. If my ghost

shark can haunt me during delirium

why not raucous bugs in the innermost

depths of my ear? Soon my fever’s bedlam

faded but the sing-song did not. Even

now, love, as I write this, the din’s low groan

keeps me distraught. I wake with radio

static, thinking the dark bellowed. Listen.

Only I can hear it, that deep bass drone;

what hell’s divas call, “Basso profundo.”

Notes:

In opera the lowest vocal range that a tenor can go is called basso profundo. Starting around a year ago I began developing tinnitus, a ringing in the ears like radio static that is often accompanied by hearing loss. In the last two months or so it has gone from a dull buzz that I could ignore to a much louder droning which wakes me up at night. I find the sort of disconnected musing I need, such as when I’m writing, harder now.

There’s my Bayou shark, requiem, nimble

through swamp and misty fen. I’ve seen her twist,

turn and sashay away. A wolfish girdle

flitting through cypress bogs. When frost and mist

cake this lake, though, I can find no old souls;

just ice flows and shadows. I got conjure

and shine but as this wintertide gale rolls

through mud and bone I find my warm water

guide is blind. She cannot find me. Iced lakes.

Sightless seers. Gods fade in this pallid

polar light. Dwindling surf’s boom. What can

a shark haunting the Gulf know of frost’s ache?

Nothing good throbs under my closed eyelids

since words make a poet, gods a shaman.

crushing dark

Always a pregnant shark. I stripped naked,
lurched — and fell into swiftness of her dream

down the dark column until brine chanted
night eyes transformed from iridescent gleam

to the dull brown set in my skull’s ruins.
I come back from the night sea no wiser.

Why the gods single out us twitchy ones
to be their voice I don’t know. With tincture,

with balm, with sauce, the pregnant one, ghost shark,
finds me. But her words don’t translate this side

of tide-water. I flow through crushing dark
without dogma. It’s just womb, moon and tide

without the need for priest, pride or shaman,
without the need for anything human.
