It is called the “We Are Our Mountains” statue, located north of Stepanakert, the capital city of Nagorno-Karabakh. Built in 1967 by Sargis Baghdasaryan.
That last reply…came across as my wife. She just got off the computer so I could do some work..and weird things happen.
Amazing what people do where there’s little except rock to deal with. Petra comes to mind, and Southwest First Peoples, and Egyptians, and on and on. The Souix finally got a mountain carved like Crazy Horse…after Rushmore was built in their Black Hills, glorifying presidents who encouraged their slaughter. And this was built in 1967…didn’t know anyone got ambitious enough to carve monumental rock art any longer.

Yes, what people can do with a pick-axe and several tons of TNT can be amazing at times. I’ve never seen the We Are Mountains statue personally; when I lived in Armenia the whole region called Nagorno-Karabakh was off-limits to American volunteers because of the pesky war going on. They remind me of those giant stone Buddhas in Afghanistan that the Taliban blew up a couple of years back. Rock-cut symbols do have a certain magic to them you don’t see in other forms of art.
Amazing what people have done with mountains and stone when they have little else to work with…Petra comes to mind, as do the cities of Southwest First Peoples. Great the Souix have a mountain carved in the image of Crazy Horse now, after Rushmore was put in the middle of their sacred Black Hills, agrandizing presidents who encouraged their slaughter. And this was created in 1967…didn’t know any One was ambitous enough to make such monumental art in stone any longer. Further education…
