cocaine, Edna St. Vincent Millay, find your magic, Mile High Club, poem, Poetry, sky rift, sonnet, vodka, winter storm harper

Of course it’s magic: when the airplane leaves
the laws of gravity, that slight shifting

in my awareness. The sky opens, heaves
us up into it. Just then everything

flows, a tingling in my teeth and toes —-
vodka, cocaine, even the Mile High Club;

it all might happen. Like magic that shows
us how to escape. Millay’s candle stub

sputtered, burned out at both ends. My passion
seems a small thing up here, too. The sky rifts

around us. It’s not the will, it’s the means;
miles high in a box indifferent to sin,

to lewd moods, to all of desire’s gifts.
This realm of celibate gods, sexless fiends.

your lips slightly bruised kiss the demons run
when a good man comes with primal urges

with a seventh son of a seventh son
with your mama’s blessings on your curl-fuzz

your first pubic hair your first change bad boys
who say stay away taste these crimson lips

you can’t help yourself and the noise the noise
of the rough bite on your bottom your hips

suck you are your fingers in I know I
know it’s serious more than metal fills

gag your throat hard next time both of my thumbs
to bruise your first curl a devil’s reply

to one who consumes vodka morphine pills
consumes everything when a good man comes

Make it quaint like crack pipes, blow for cheap grace,
—resin residue, —dew in the eyes, —pink
eye, —this pleasure dripping over your face
in gobs. I drink and I drink glob I drink.
This high will do. Vodka then gin, thus we
begin. Do not make it ugly. Drivel
does not impress. Make it blade, a belly
cutting cute. Make it the only odd skull.
The last thing they’ll ever find of. You’re blue
by thy nature. Blue by thy blow. I can’t
care where you went to school, fool. What awards
you got and sold. Which old hippie you blew.
Scare me new. Blow my lid. Make me recant
poetry. I want not chaff knives but swords.
