day-glo, except need, greed, need, poem, Poetry, smut, sonnet

A beat oozes from somewhere deep below
me. It’s the rattle of the fan. The squeaks

that the floor makes. The day’s heat, all day-glo,
neon green, waves filtering up in streaks,

halos. I feel it when I press my cheek
against the warped wood; a beat totally

alien to my own heart. A wild shriek
of drums when drums shriek. What debauchery

isn’t kinship to such noise? That riot
of want that has no language except need.

I hear it, barely. All that you call smut
I call prayer. All that is green and honeyed.

All prayer is need. I bend down to the floor.
I need more than this queer beat. I need more.

It’s not the cock rock, the hinted blow jobs,
the bell bottoms, it’s the dishonesty.

What gets left out: Pox, Crabs, Corn on the Cob,
Bugs in a Rug, Hippie Herpes, Jenny

Warts. What gets left in: the glorious fun
sex can be. I’m all for holy fucking;

but if you have no words for abortion
or rape or STDs, then you’re selling

something. All revolutions are just lies
told by the winning side, since we’re still slut

shaming, still denying women their rights
to their bodies. Somewhere between your thighs

lies the mystery. We need new words. Smut
can be sublime but honesty excites.

Take me down in a tidal pool; swimsuit
around my knees. “Skerries beg/ the seal’s
bride,”
we once sang. I am Neptune’s child: mute,
dark-eyed, insatiable. I sing the eel’s
want, the urchin’s need. I know of the sin
that can only be found under the moon,
down at ebb time’s tide. Take me; make my chin
slick from your spray. Even sex-starved Neptune
found joy sitting on the sand and dreaming
of what lay below. We are all sex-starved.
Let the great, gray seal colony — crying,
“lick me, lick me” — cry. I love a myth carved
into shifting sand; obscure and far-flung.
I love the selkie’s cock, the siren’s tongue.
