“Give them pleasure – the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.”
— Alfred Hitchcock

To the edge of the dream he comes; barefoot,
cloven-hoof, crooked goat legs. I do not know
his name, but from his pipes and his man’s root,
a cock from hell, garbled prayer-songs grow;
like a root, a tree, a mountain, vaulting
heaven and shadowing earth. To the edge
of the dream he comes; unabashed, playing
nightmare to my dreams. Passing a stone hedge,
a street, a market where ham-hocks and fish
dangle in the window, I follow. Dream
logic says I can do nothing else. Prayer-
songs on cobbles, his clip-clop, his goatish
delight that I’m there, to hear his obscene
song, to be the dreamer to his nightmare.

Notes.

Aristotle said that for Heraclitus the soul was the “exhalation of which everything else is composed
of;” and Walt Whitman asked, “if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?”

Not Pan, the Goat herder, the Goat fucker,

lover of Goat porn. Nothing sleeps within

the trees here. Those gods died with their timber

hacked from bygone groves. Still, a thing moves in

the dark these days. Even you, as faithless

as you are, feel it. Your limb’s lust each time

voluptuous Plump Rump Callipyge Venus

calls. The other old school booty. Sublime

curves in this cleared land. Venus spreads her cheeks

while I tease with cock and thumb. Rude, sacred

prayers are still out there; just not Pan, the Goat

fucker. Who’ll teach you new techniques

if you’ve lost your faith? Fill my head, she said,

with prayer. I’ll gag on your cock in my throat.

Notes:

The Romantic poets (Shelley, Byron, etc.) spend a lot of time moaning that ancient Greece’s eden, Arcadia, is lost to us in this modern era of cynicism and technology. According to the Greek historian Plutarch, Pan (protector of shepherds, seducer of nymphs and inventor of the syrinx panpipes) is the only Greek god who actually dies (and with him, Arcadia). According to myth, a sailor on his way to Italy heard a divine voice hail him across the waves: “When you reach the harbor at Palodes, tell the world that the great god Pan is dead.” Why some myths become popular while others don’t (especially considering Lord “I’ll Fuck Anything That Moves” Byron) I have always been fond of the stories about the Callipygian Venus, who the Romans called: “Venus with the Beautiful Ass.” Hers is an Arcadia that will never be lost.

Each wave soft enough to knead, red and sweet
stunning currents, swampland drifting in drips
inside of me, splishing over goat-feet,
                                 ][
goat-teats, goat-apocalypse, my goat-lips,
my dark constitution. Curly Just Bled,
Ram Lamb, Roy Batty, Brigid Bard, all slept
                                 ][
in my dollhouse. When the rain fell I fled.
Off with them twirled in ropes. Most toys, unwept,
hang. Most gods unable to swim must drown.
                                 ][
Here’s my belly, bread, oil. My pink talon
will spear you a piece while a scarred rain balls
across the swamp. There is no higher ground.
                                 ][
Pan is my main man, but even gods shun
the doomed; a drowning goat-girl and her dolls.

From here all the tree trunks are blackly white
against cool-copper background. These lines thrust

clear and erect into coming twilight.
How did Freud ever pass through such forests?

They’re all so palpable … phallic. For me,
walking among the oaks intoxicates.

Not all lovers are forest gods, beasties,
freaks; but they should be. Sap runs, animates

flesh, dew and clay. “I stripped off my sarong,
ran all mad-blood through the dappled down grass.

Rude horn of Pan. Gripping you with both hands
until you splattered, rose-lily, along

my chin, my palms, my hair, across my ass,”
whispered the demon of the cropped marshlands.
